Long Distance Running: Top 5 Footwear Tips

When it comes to running long distances happy and healthy feet can make a big difference and choosing the correct shoes for the job can be very challenging but it is very important to prevent sore feet and possible injury. Many runners are very particular on the type of shoes that they choose when running long distances and many compare it to buying a new house or choosing which car to buy because you have to like them! Below are some tips that we have found to help runners in choosing the correct running shoe.

1. When choosing your shoes, you have to know the shape of your foot. Do you have flat feet, neutral feet, or high arches? This is important because choosing the wrong shape of shoe in this step can lead to plantar fasciitis, shin splints, and other injuries that can be caused by the wrong type of shoe.

2. Find something that is lightweight and durable. Finding a shoe that is lightweight and durable will ensure that you tire less easily during long runs and will also ensure that the shoes you just spend a good amount of money on, will last for hundreds of miles!

3. Know your size. Knowing the size of shoe you need varies by brand but most runners usually prefer to buy their running shoes a half size larger than their everyday street shoes. Why? Because it is usually more comfortable to have some wiggle room for your toes so you can firmly plant your foot on each stride. Of course, this all depends on personal preference.

4. Find a running store that does a gait analysis for their customers. Many running shoes stores will have their customers run on a treadmill or have their customers run outside on the sidewalk. Many sales staffs are professionally trained to analyze the gait of a runner to correct any overpronation that a they might have, help a runner who supinates with a shoe that absorbs shock, and also find a shoe that compliments a runners foot strike if they already have a neutral step.

5. Find a shoe that fits your budget. We all know how expensive shoes can be. Finding a pair of shoes that fits a person's budget and is also a pair that they like can be tricky, but it isn't impossible. Do research online and look for deals, especially if you know the kind of shoe that will fit your needs as a runner. Websites like www.amazon.com, www.zappos.com, and www.runningwarehouse.com are all websites that have great deals everyday for running shoes!
