Young Chippewa’s run hard in East Lansing
On September 17 the Central Michigan Cross Country team ran in the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State. It was the Chippewa’s second meet of the season and the Chippewa’s looked to get experience to some of their younger runners. “We’re not trying set records or beat other teams,” Coach Matt Kaczor said. Coach Kaczor’s plan was to have the younger runners compete in the moderate 6K Spartan Invitational, while the veterans rest for the demanding 8K Roy Griak Invitational the following week.
Although scores were not kept the Women Chippewa’s ran a great race. Kelly Schubert led CMU finishing 21st out of 318 runners at the Spartan Invitational. Schubert, a junior, had finishing time of 22 minutes and 21 seconds in the race. The rest of the lady Chippewa’s finished as followed: Samantha Allmacher placed 40th in 23:12, Jamie Madrigal was 70th in 23:46; Hannah Davis was 72nd in 23:49; Esther Bell placed 95th in 24:21; Katie Weiler was 113th in 24:45; Katie Kasper finished 117th in 24:49; and Brooke Morgan was 135th in 25:09. Coach Kaczor had this to say "Schubert ran fine. She should have been in the top 25, like where she was. The person with the race for us was Jamie Madrigal. Good performance for her. She moved her way up throughout the race. I was very impressed with the way she handled it." The lady Chippewa’s now prepare for the challenging 8K Griak Invitational.
Although the CMU Men’s XC had the challenging task of an 8K run young runners still got the opportunity to compete. Mark Beckman lead the Chippewa’s in the men’s race finishing 66th out of 390 with a time of 26:40. The rest of the men’s team placed as followed: Luke Anderson was 71st in 26:42; Spencer Nousain was 74th in 26:46; Monte Scott placed 178th in 28:07; Casey Voisin finished 181st in 28:13; Ben Yagiela was 197th in 28:25; and Alec Esparza finished 205th in 28:34. Teams were also not scored for the men’s race. Coach Kaczor was impressed by the 4 freshman that ran during the men’s events saying that "those guys, they're going to be a huge help to us come the end of the season and getting this valuable experience now was huge for them." The men’s team will also head to the Griak Invitational in the following week.
