CMU men’s cross country take the top six spots; women’s cross country finishes three in the top four
Sept. 4, 2015
Mount Pleasant, MI it was a great day for CMU cross country, both the men’s and women’s team finished the Jeff Drenth Memorial 5k with grand results. The men in particular finished 6 of their 7 runners in the top 6. Nate Ghena led the charge with Joseph Emmanuel and Silas Dekalita crossing the line in second and third.
These three runners are expected to lead the Chippewa’s all year long. Ghena finished the race with a time of 15 minutes and 29.46 seconds, with the overall team coming in for a combined time of 1 hour 18 minutes and 1second.
The friendly 5k included Michigan State and Alma along with a few unattached runners as well. Michigan State came in second as a team with Alma bringing up the rear in third.
The results were much of the same on the women’s side of the course as well. CMU women’s cross country finished with a combined overall time 1 hour 31 minutes and 16 seconds while placing 5 of their 7 runners in the top 10. Erin Mcdonald won the race for the Spartans while her time of 17 minutes 30.2 seconds was a great individual effort it wasn’t enough to give her team first as MSU took second place in the Drenth Memorial.
CMU women Kristen Olling, Kelly Schubert and Megan O’Neill came in second, third, and fourth at the invite. Teammate and senior Breanne Lesnar cheered her team on from sidelines while nursing an injury. She is expected to be ready to run soon.
Overall the Chippewa’s are a healthy squad and they plan to continue to execute future races with similar results. Here is what associated head coach Matt Kaczor had to say about his teams efforts.
"Overall we executed the race plan pretty much perfectly; the guys went through 2 seconds faster than what we asked for. Our pack is starting to round out. The ladies, we had them work on some things. We're looking for working on race strategies and on weaknesses at this point."
The season looks to be off to a great start for the Chips as they look toward their next outing, the Michigan State Spartan Invitational, to build on their current momentum. That race is scheduled for September 18th in East Lansing, MI.
